Focus and Scope

craft + design enquiry is a new, open access, peer-reviewed, online journal. It aims to promote and disseminate the research excellence generated by and about the craft and design sector. craft + design enquiry investigates the contribution that contemporary craft and design makes to society. It establishes a dialogue between craft and design practice and cultural, social and environmental concerns. It interrogates and expands the international recognition of Australian craft and design.

craft + design enquiry is published by the Craft Australia Research Centre. The Research Centre calls for papers once a year on specific themes and research areas for future issues of craft + design enquiry. Submitted papers are peer-reviewed and selected papers are published in craft + design enquiry.

craft + design enquiry welcomes submissions from across the field of craft and design including artists and practitioners, curators, historians, art and cultural theorists, educationalists, museum professionals, philosophers, scientists and any others with a stake in the future developments of craft and design. Peer Review Process

craft + design enquiry is a peer-reviewed journal. The craft + design enquiry Editorial Advisory Panel is composed of internationally-recognised experts and academics, who provide reviews in the fields of their expertise. Each paper is reviewed by at least two peers. The process uses a double-blind, review process where contributors and peer-reviewers remain anonymous throughout the review process. Reviewers may request changes to papers.

Contributors are asked to ensure their identities are not revealed in any way within their paper and that the paper is not submitted to other publications during the review process with craft + design enquiry and Craft Australia. (See Submissions/ Author Guidelines.) If favourably reviewed, and at the discretion of the craft + design enquiry editorial team and Craft Australia, the paper will be published in craft + design enquiry e-journal.

Open Access Policy

This journal provides immediate open access to its content on the principle that making research freely available to the public supports a greater global exchange of knowledge.

Guidelines for Reviewers

The Craft Australia Craft and Design Research Centre encourages research to increase dialogue and discussion about craft and design. The aims of the Centre are to support research that increases the understanding of contemporary craft and design and the contribution it makes to society; conferences and symposia that expand the recognition of craft and design; and research in Australian craft and design.

The Craft Australia Guidelines for Reviewers has been developed as an overview of Craft Australia's expectations and procedures when refereeing papers. Once papers have been accepted for publishing, and at the discretion of Craft Australia, they will be published online through the Centre's e-journal, craft + design enquiry.

craft + design enquiry encourages both papers that conform to the usual conventions of academic publishing and papers that test less conventional or alternative means of documenting and disseminating research about the field. In this sense the journal will be unique in encouraging practitioners to critically analyse and evaluate knowledge gained through their experience as makers. At the same time it will provide a forum for researchers from a variety of disciplines to share insights into the field and, additionally, we welcome collaborative pieces between artists and writers or others with an interest in the field.

Considerations

To assist with the review process we ask peer-reviewers to consider the following when refereeing a paper.

  • Does the paper fit within the objectives of the call for papers?
  • Does the Introduction clearly summarise the area to be covered and make apparent the key  issues and argument/s of the paper?
  • Does the  paper cover the ground outlined in the Introduction coherently?
  • Is the author explaining themselves clearly  -  is the paper well written and structured, key terms explained and contextual framework clearly identified?

Does the author provide evidence for their arguments?

  • Does the content make a contribution to research, discussion or debate? is the contribution to knowledge the paper makes clearly articulated? For instance has  the ground been well covered  elsewhere;  is the paper primarily descriptive rather than critically analytical?
  • Are tables and figures clear? Do they make sense on their own? Are there too many or too few?
  • Is the author's writing style appropriate? Does it keep the reader's interest?
  • Is the conclusion insightful? Significant?

There is no obligation to accept a paper that requires more work or does not meet the required criteria. Comments are encouraged as authors will benefit from your expertise.

Process

Peer-reviewers will receive, via email, a Review Package which will include a copy of the original Call for Papers statement, a Referee Form, the paper/s to be reviewed, and a copy of  contact details for the guest editor of the relevant issue of CDE and the managing editor.

A Style Guide has been developed for authors and is available to reviewers for reference, if required.

The review process will be anonymous and papers shall be refereed as:

1. Publish unaltered;

2. Publish with minor revisions (made to the satisfaction of the editor/editorial committee);

3. Publish with major revisions;

4. Reject: inappropriate material (may suggest other journals, if appropriate);

5. Reject: inadequate quality.

Comments

The reviewers are asked to make comments about the paper as part of the review process. There is a 'comments' section at the end of the referee form. These comments with become part of the editors feedback given to the author of the paper and we ask that they be written in a manner that can be passed on.

There is also a 'comments' section for you to make comments to the editors. These comments are for the editors only and can also be found at the end of the referee form.

Completion

At the completion of each review process Craft Australia will send a letter to reviewers acknowledging their contribution to craft + design enquiry and the Craft Australia Research Centre.
